Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid Hardwood Flooring

For some, there's nothing quite so authentic as a solid natural block or plank floor. Our solid timber floors are a statement of quality, which goes back to Atkinson & Kirby's roots in 1903. Whilst the format is steeped in tradition, the character you can give a space with solid wood is as varied as the tonal richness of wood itself.

FAQs

Solid Hardwood Flooring

Can you glue down solid hardwood flooring?

Yes, solid hardwood flooring can be glued down, but the correct adhesive is crucial. A flexible wood flooring adhesive should be used to accommodate natural expansion and contraction. The subfloor must be:

  •  Dry - a moisture test should be conducted before installation
  •  Level – any unevenness should be rectified with a suitable levelling compound
  •  Prepared – concrete subfloors require a damp proof membrane (DPM) to prevent moisture damage

While glue down installation is common in commercial spaces or where underfloor heating is present, secret nail down remains the preferred method for wooden subfloors due to its stability.

Does solid wood flooring need underlay?

Underlay is not required for secret nail installations, but a moisture barrier is recommended for subfloor protection. For glue down installations, a damp proof membrane (DPM) is essential when working with concrete to prevent moisture damage.

Acoustic underlays may be necessary in multi story buildings or commercial spaces to meet sound insulation requirements. Choosing the right underlay depends on the project’s specific needs.

How long do solid hardwood floors last?

Solid hardwood flooring offers exceptional longevity, with a lifespan of 50 to 100 years in commercial and residential settings when properly maintained. Key factors influencing durability include:

  • Wood type – harder woods (e.g., oak, maple) withstand heavy foot traffic better
  • Finish type – high quality lacquers or oils enhance resistance to wear and moisture
  • Maintenance - regular cleaning, refinishing and protective measures extend the lifespan

For high traffic areas, consider a commercial grade finish to improve durability and reduce long term maintenance costs.

Is solid wood flooring suitable for underfloor heating?

No, solid wood flooring is not suitable for use over underfloor heating systems under any circumstances. The natural expansion and contraction of solid wood due to temperature changes can lead to warping, gaps, and instability.
