Engineered Hardwood Flooring
Engineered wood flooring offers the same sophistication of solid wood flooring, while using smaller amounts of eco-precious hardwoods and benefiting from added practicality. Made up of multiple layers of wood with a solid veneer, these floors combine the natural beauty of wood with a practical, durable finish.
Our precision engineered wood flooring boards deliver on style, with exceptional quality, stability and performance. They're less prone to warping or shrinking than solid wood options, and are ideal for humid environments. What’s more, engineered wood flooring is suitable for use with underfloor heating.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring
Can you sand engineered hardwood flooring?

Yes, but with limitations. Engineered hardwood flooring can be lightly sanded only if it has a thick enough wear layer (typically 3mm or more). However, most engineered floors can only be sanded and refinished once or twice in their lifetime.
                            Is engineered hardwood flooring waterproof?

Engineered hardwood flooring is water resistant but not 100% waterproof. The top wood layer can handle some moisture, but excessive water exposure can cause warping or damage.
Is it possible to repair a small scratch?

Yes, small scratches on engineered hardwood flooring can often be repaired. For minor surface scratches, you can use a hardwood floor repair kit or a colour matched wood marker to blend the scratch with the surrounding area. For slightly deeper scratches, a wax repair stick or a small amount of wood filler can help conceal the damage. If the scratch is more noticeable, lightly buffing the area with fine steel wool and reapplying a matching finish may improve the appearance. To prevent future scratches, consider using rugs, furniture pads and regular cleaning to protect your floors.
Do I need underlayment for engineered hardwood flooring?

                        - Yes, for floating installations, underlay provides moisture protection, sound reduction and subfloor levelling.
- For glue-down installations, underlay isn't necessary, but a DPM (damp proof membrane) may be required for concrete subfloors.
- For nail down installations, an appropriate wood flooring underlay can reduce noise and cushion the floor.
Always match the underlay type to the installation method and site conditions.
                            Does engineered wood flooring expand?

Yes, but significantly less than solid wood due to its multi layered construction. However, some movement can still occur with humidity changes. Always leave a 10-15mm expansion gap around the perimeter to prevent buckling.
How long does engineered wood flooring last?

When installed correctly and properly maintained, engineered hardwood flooring can last 20-30 years. The lifespan depends on factors like:
- Wear layer thickness – Thicker wear layers allow for refinishing
- Quality of installation – Proper subfloor prep and adhesive use extend longevity
- Traffic levels – Commercial spaces may need more frequent refinishing
Can you nail engineered hardwood flooring?

Yes, but only engineered planks with a plywood core can be nailed down. This method is typically used for:
- Installations over wooden subfloors or plywood
- Projects requiring a more permanent, stable installation
- Boards with tongue and groove profiles, which are designed for nailing
For concrete subfloors, a glue down method is preferred.
Can you reuse engineered hardwood flooring?

                        - Floating floors with click lock systems can be removed and reinstalled.
- Nailed down or glued down floors are much harder to reuse, as planks may be damaged during removal.
If a client needs a reusable flooring option, floating engineered wood is the best choice.
Does engineered hardwood flooring need to acclimate?

Yes, engineered wood flooring should acclimate on site for at least 48 hours before installation. Store the planks in the room where they’ll be fitted, allowing them to adjust to the temperature and humidity. Skipping this step can lead to expansion or contraction issues post installation
Does engineered wood flooring scratch easily?

Engineered wood flooring is more resistant to scratches than solid wood, but it’s not scratch proof. Advise clients to:
- Use hard wearing finishes like UV cured aluminum oxide for extra durability
- Install rugs and furniture protectors in high traffic areas
- Recommend oil based finishes for easier spot repairs

Solid Hardwood Flooring
For some, there's nothing quite so authentic as a solid natural block or plank floor. Our solid timber floors are a statement of quality, which goes back to Atkinson & Kirby's roots in 1903. Whilst the format is steeped in tradition, the character you can give a space with solid wood is as varied as the tonal richness of wood itself.
